The ARK CLS Seismic Coloured Inversion plugin enables rapid band-limited inversion of seismic data. A single convolution inversion operator is derived which optimally inverts the data. The spectrum of the inverted data honours the available well data spectra in a global sense. Generally, traditional inversion methods (e.g. sparse-spike) are time consuming, expensive, require specialists and are not performed routinely by the Interpretation Geophysicist, whereas SCI is rapid, easy to use, inexpensive, robust and does not require expert users. SCI and unconstrained sparse-spike appear to give broadly equivalent results.

SCI facilitates interpretation of layer boundaries and detection of hard and soft layers as well as changes in fluid fill. A major benefit of SCI over model-driven inversion methods is that the results are not biased by an imposed low-frequency model. A drawback is that the impedance values are not absolute, which means that the results are not well suited for quantitative interpretation work flows. However, an interesting quantitative work flow to predict net-to-gross values from SCI data has been developed by BP scientists and is supported in OpendTect's Seismic Net Pay plugin.

All commercial plugins require OpendTect Pro.
