Prograding Deltaic Systems in Action – The Eridanos Delta Story

In the GIF slideshow below, you can watch the evolution of a prograding deltaic system — the Eridanos Delta, which extended from the Baltic region into the North Sea during the Miocene to Pleistocene.

Before interpreting the seismic data, we first addressed an important challenge: surface-related multiples. These can obscure primary reflections and complicate stratigraphic interpretation. To tackle this, we used SimpleHmult, a 3D U-Net deep-learning model trained to suppress such multiples. In this example, we applied it specifically to the interval between the FS4 (yellow) and FS8 (green) horizons.

Next, we generated a truncated Horizon Cube (HC) and used it to flatten the data into the Wheeler domain. This transformation reveals how depositional centers shifted through relative geologic time, offering a time-sliced view of sedimentary evolution.

In the Wheeler domain, the dynamic story of the delta becomes clear — progradation, shifting depocenters, and stratigraphic stacking patterns emerge vividly.

We used these insights to perform a systems tracts interpretation in OpendTect’s SSIS module, combining advanced AI-based processing with classical sequence stratigraphy concepts.
