Digitizing Stratigraphy for SynthRock Forward Modeling in OpendTect
Forward modeling is a powerful tool for predicting reservoir potential, but before QI geophysicists can build these models, they need to construct a stratigraphic framework based on well data or the geology of the study area.
In OpendTect, stratigraphic modeling is done per formation, typically consisting of three key formations: above, reservoir, and below, along with markers for the top and base of the reservoir. While accurate geological ages are crucial for seismic sequence stratigraphy, they aren’t required for SynthRock forward modeling. Here, formations are simply ordered from oldest to youngest.
Users can also add fluid content, specifying lithotypes with oil, gas, or brine, creating a flexible structure that reflects the geology’s complexity. The modeling hierarchy can be as detailed as needed—check out the short video for an example and let us know what you think!
