    Amplitude vs Frequency: Finding Hydrocarbons Without Going Pre-Stack

    AVO (Amplitude vs Offset) Intercept × Gradient is a well-established technique in seismic exploration for hydrocarbon detection. However, its reliance on carefully processed pre-stack gathers often limits practical application.

    In 2021, Mandong et al. introduced an alternative post-stack approach: AVF (Amplitude vs Frequency) Intercept × Gradient. This method leverages a key property of seismic wave propagation in hydrocarbon-bearing reservoirs—higher frequencies attenuate more rapidly than lower ones. By applying spectral decomposition and computing Intercept × Gradient on frequency components, AVF captures this diagnostic energy loss without the need for pre-stack data.
