AI as a starting point for seismic interpretation in OpendTect
Out of curiosity, I recently asked Google’s AI mode a simple question: How do I map faults in OpendTect?
The answer wasn’t perfect — it didn’t fully distinguish between mapping fault planes directly versus interpreting fault sticks and grouping them into planes. But that’s not really the point.
What stood out was how quickly it provided a structured starting point, along with links to relevant videos and webinars that would otherwise take time to track down manually.
This highlights something important for our workflows:
👉 AI tools like Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity are becoming very effective at getting you started 👉 They can summarize workflows, suggest approaches, and surface useful resources within seconds 👉 For experienced interpreters, they can act as a memory refresher or a quick way to explore alternatives
However — and this is key — they are not a substitute for proper training or validated workflows.
In OpendTect, for example, the difference between:
interpreting fault sticks first, then grouping into planes versus directly working with fault plane detection tools …is essential for getting reliable results.
AI might blur that distinction.
That’s why we still recommend: ✔️ Checking the latest training videos and tutorials ✔️ Following validated interpretation workflows ✔️ Using AI as a companion, not an authority
In short: AI gives you a head start — but interpretation quality still depends on your expertise and the right workflow.
