Empowering the Next Generation of Geoscientists
For over 30 years, OpendTect has helped universities worldwide unlock the full potential of seismic data—supporting education, innovation, and breakthrough research in geoscience.
Academic License
Bring professional seismic interpretation into your classroom and research labs

The OpendTect Academic License gives universities access to the same powerful interpretation tools used across industry—at no cost for qualified institutions. It is designed to put professional-grade software directly in the hands of professors, lecturers, and students so that learning happens on the platforms they will encounter in their careers.
Academic licenses must be requested by accredited faculty members—professors, lecturers, or institutional staff. Students cannot apply independently, but they can freely use the software through their institution. Use is strictly limited to teaching and non-commercial academic research; commercial or paid work is not permitted under this license.
Approved institutions receive full access to OpendTect Pro (Academic Edition) together with a curated set of commercial plugins to enrich the curriculum. We also provide ready-to-use teaching materials, datasets, tutorials, and hands-on installation support for classrooms and computer labs—so faculty can focus on teaching rather than setup.
With these tools, students gain real-world skills in seismic interpretation, attribute analysis, fault and horizon modeling, AI-assisted workflows, and reservoir characterization—the same competencies expected by today's energy, geothermal, and CCS employers.
Research Collaboration
Turn ideas into impact with industry-grade technology
We partner with leading universities and research organizations to push the boundaries of geoscience and data-driven innovation. Our collaborations span advanced seismic interpretation workflows, machine learning and AI in geoscience, synthetic data generation with SynthRock, reservoir characterization for energy transition applications, and emerging geothermal and CO₂ storage solutions.
Partners gain access to OpendTect Pro and our advanced plugins, Python tools for cutting-edge data science, and—most importantly—direct collaboration with our R&D experts. Many engagements grow into joint development and innovation projects that shape the next generation of subsurface workflows.
For research institutes
Research institutes are not eligible for academic licenses, but we offer tailored collaboration models and special commercial agreements. Contact us at info@dgbes.com to explore partnership opportunities.
Publications & Academic Impact
OpendTect powers research that shapes the future of geoscience. From peer-reviewed publications and master's and PhD theses to AI and machine learning case studies, the platform is cited across exploration, geothermal, and CCS research worldwide. Our open architecture makes it easy for researchers to build on prior work, share reproducible workflows, and extend the science.
Student Resources
Start learning. Keep exploring. Go further.
Students and early-career geoscientists can access a rich ecosystem of learning tools to grow from first interpretation to advanced research. Step-by-step tutorials in our Training Manual walk through the core OpendTect workflows, while real datasets and practical exercises give you something tangible to work with from day one.
When you're ready to go deeper, follow our Machine Learning educational paths to build AI-powered interpretation skills, or explore Python scripts and notebooks to integrate OpendTect with the wider data science ecosystem. For visual learners, our video tutorials and webinars cover everything from product fundamentals to advanced research workflows.
